DHAKA, Sept 17, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi today said proportional representation (PR) system in polls is being used to muddle up democracy of the country.
He said, "Attempts are being made to distort democracy by bringing the PR system to the forefront and it's a malicious conspiracy that is a threat to the country's democratic continuity and political stability."
Rizvi made the remarks while speaking with journalists at the party's central office in Naya paltan this afternoon.
The senior BNP leader, referencing to the party's long-standing movement for democracy, said, "Democracy means tolerating dissent and providing an opportunity for dissent. In our view, all political parties and alliances in the country have the right to express their own opinions, demands and programmes. But suddenly bringing the PR system forward and taking the position that an election is impossible without it is a deliberate attempt to muddle up democracy."
Mentioning that PR system conflicts with the public's established political culture and familiar voting practices, Rizvi said, "Whenever a party thinks a certain method will give them a political advantage, they try to force it upon others. This is an expression of political envy and self-serving mentality. There is a political conspiracy behind introducing the PR system, with the goal of sabotaging the election."
Rizvi urged the political parties to pursue a realistic and people-centric electoral system instead of creating confusion over the PR system.
He called upon all political parties to participate in an inclusive election. BNP believes that the electoral system should reflect the will of the people and be trusted by them.
BNP Joint Secretary General Habib Un Nabi Khan Sohel and Assistant Office Secretary Munir Hossain were also present during the discussion.
