DHAKA, Sept 16, 2025 (BSS) – Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) today disbanded smoking at its main compound in the capital to save the employees and service recipients and others who visit  the state-run entity from the direct and passive impact of tobacco smokes.

“A huge number of people alongside the regular employees come to the WASA Bhaban every day. The ban will help them evade the adverse affect of smoking,” WASA’s deputy managing director said at a view exchange meeting.

Islam, who is entrusted with the task overseeing the water and sanitation agency’s human resources and administration, added that smoking was almost equally harful for non smokers who were forced to inhale smokes released by smokers in close proximity.

Development Organisation of the Rural Poor (DORP) and Dhaka WASA jointly organised the meeting to intensify anti-tobacco campaign aimed at advancing the goal of a tobacco-free Bangladesh.

Coordinator of DORP’s tobacco control project Zeba Afroza presented the keynote paper, while its deputy executive director Mohammad Zobair Hasan delivered welcome speech while the event was chaired by WASA’s chief engineer M Abdus Salam Bepari.

Messages carrying anti-smoking messages were stuck on walls message boards were set at key locations throughout the Dhaka WASA building after the meeting.
