DHAKA, Sept 17, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury today said street movement at the present time means disrespecting the negotiation table of the National Consensus Commission.
"The movement called by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and a few other political parties despite ongoing discussions is being viewed as an insult to the negotiation table," he said while speaking with journalists at his office in Banani.
Amir Khasru said, "The call for a movement in support of proportional representation (PR) system (in polls) was made due to an aversion to elections. This has led to the public questioning whether Jamaat intends to destabilize the country. To occupy the political field through democratic means, one must participate in elections and secure the people's mandate."
"By calling for a movement, Jamaat has shown it doesn't respect the discussions of the consensus commission and is ignoring the election. The people of the country are waiting to vote and those who conspire to disrupt the voting will lose the people's trust. For the sake of democracy, there is no alternative to the election in February, 2026," he added.
Mentioning that discussions are ongoing in the National Consensus Commission, the veteran BNP leader said, "Discussions are still ongoing. Consensus has already been reached on most issues. The issues that haven't yet reached a consensus are still under discussion, and to call for a movement now means disrespecting the negotiation table."
In response to a journalist's question, he answered, "There is no question of pressure. Our leaders and activists have already begun their election journey. When the public is waiting for an election, the field must be occupied through vote campaigning. The people want a peaceful environment and if anyone creates an obstacle, they will have to consider their own political future."
