Former Gaforgaon mayor Among 22 AL Leaders Held in Dhaka

DHAKA, Sept 16, 2025 (BSS) - Police have arrested 22 leaders and activists of the Awami League (AL) and its affiliated organizations from various parts of Dhaka for allegedly attempting to disrupt law and order through unauthorized processions.

Detective Branch (DB) Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Muhammad Talebur Rahman, confirmed the arrests.

Among those detained are Advocate Kaiser Ahmed, former mayor of Gaforgaon Municipality and ex-Liberation War Affairs Secretary of the Awami Jubo League; Md. Yunus Ali alias Elias, former general secretary of Bura Majumdar Union AL in Barguna; Shamim Osman, a Jubo League leader from Gazipur; Md. Mahmud Dewan Shipu, general secretary of the Ward 26 West End High School Unit under Dhaka South AL; and Md. Jamil Hossain, the office secretary of the same unit.

Also arrested were Md. Soleman, vice-president of Ward 53 Krishak League under Dhaka North; Ikramul Hasan Rubel, former president of Ward 67 Swechchhasebak League under Dhaka South; Kazi Olid Islam, former general secretary of Tangail District Jubo League and chairman of Basail Upazila; Khairul Islam alias Jewel Khan, president of the Barontek Unit Sramik League; Md. Sajib Khan, senior vice-president of Ward 35 Chhatra League; Md. Aslam Khan, general secretary of the AL Unit 06 and Ward 09 under Darussalam; and Hiru Mia, president of Kaliakair Upazila Jubo League.

They were held on Monday from multiple areas, including Mirpur, Uttara, Lalbagh, Mohammadpur, Turag, Demra, Cantonment, Kotwali, and Darussalam.

Additionally, Motijheel and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police arrested 10 more activists during procession preparations. These include Anwarul Haque Selu Ahmed, former vice-president of Netrokona District Chhatra League; Md. Miraj, a former Chhatra League member; Saidul Islam Shakil, president of Shyampur Thana Chhatra League; Arifur Rahman, former Chhatra League member; Md. Tariqul Islam, former vice-president of Kazi Nazrul Islam College Chhatra League; as well as Ilias Mirz Javed, Naeem, Sabbir Hossain Rabbi, Raihan Uddin Rihan, and Abu Bakkar Siddique.

Police have filed cases against the detainees at various police stations under specific charges related to public disorder.
