Mirza Fakhrul among 70 BNP leaders acquitted from a SPA case

DHAKA, Sept 14, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today acquitted 70 leaders of BNP, including its secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and two standing committee members Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Ray, from a case filed with Shahbagh Thana under Special Powers Act (SPA). 

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sabbir Foyez gave this order after accepting the police reports in this connection, Riaz Chowdhury, a court staff, told BSS.

The other prominent BNP leaders who were acquitted from the charges are BNP vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman and Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin, senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, joint secretary general Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Saiful Islam Nirob and Sultan Salah Uddin Tuku. 

According to the police, the BNP leaders on December 11 in 2019 set on fire a motorcycle at High Court Mazar Gate area, just a day before the bail hearing of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia before the higher court in Zia Charitable Trust case.

Sub-Inspector Idris Ali of Shahbagh Thana filed a case against the leaders and workers of BNP. Police on May 10 last submitted the final report of the case before the court as they found nothing against them.
