SUNAMGANJ, Sept 1, 2025 (BSS) - Today is Raniganj Mass killing Day. On this day in 1971, the Pakistani occupation forces carried out a massacre in Raniganj Bazar on the banks of the Kushiara River in Jagannathpur, Sunamganj.
At that time, they killed more than hundred people and burnt the entire Raniganj Bazar using petrol.
According to local sources, the massacre took place in Raniganj Bazar on September 1, the day after the Sriramsi massacre on August 31.
Although more than a hundred people lost their lives in this barbaric act of history, only 34 names have been identified.
Since then, September 1 has been observed as mass killing day in the district.
This barbaric killing still makes the people of Raniganj emotional. It is known that on this day in 1971, many businessmen of Raniganj, buyers from different areas, and many locals including boatmen were victims of this massacre.
Later in 1987, through the efforts of the then Jagannathpur Upazila Parishad Chairman Professor Abu Khaled Chowdhury, the names of 34 martyrs and 3 injured were recorded. In 2010, based on the proposal of the local people, a decision was taken by the administration to pay tribute at the Sriramsi and Raniganj Genocide Memorials.
