DHAKA, Aug 25, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee Member Dr Abdul Moin Khan today said a fair election is necessary to re-establish democracy in the current situation of the country.
"It's possible to establish democracy through fair and free voting," he said as he paid tribute to mausoleum of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman on 33rd founding anniversary of the Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal.
Mentioning that democracy can't be established with gun which Sheikh Hasina showed, Moin Khan said, "The only way to establish democracy in the country is holding free and fair election. True democracy can be implemented by ensuring the voting rights of the people".
He said his party kept carrying the movement to re-establish democracy for the last 15 years under the leadership of Begum Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman.
In this movement, they have been subjected to various forms of torture including lawsuits, disappearances and murders, he said.
The movement turned into the anti-autocracy uprising with mass people's participation a year ago, resulting in ouster of Sheikh Hasina, the BNP's senior leader said.
He said the political motto of BNP is to establish democracy.
"Democracy means the rights of the people. BNP wants people to be able to freely vote and elect their representatives. The people will re-elect the representative who does good work. And if they don't fulfill people's aspirations, the countrymen will reject them. This is the power of democracy," he added.
The veteran BNP leader also said the main goal of the Liberation War was to establish democracy and economic prosperity. "We are working towards that goal. Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman taught us that lesson," he said.
Regarding the upcoming national elections, Moin Khan said, the interim government and the chief adviser have announced the possible election time.
"The people of Bangladesh have not been able to vote for almost 17 years. Those who were 18 in 2009, they now have reached 35. They could not cast vote during these 17 years. We hope that in February 2026, they will finally get a chance to vote," he said.
