DHAKA, Aug 14, 2025 (BSS)- A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today between Mongla Port Authority and Bangladesh Navy to implement a conservation dredging project in Pashur channel.
Shipping Adviser Brigadier General Dr M Sakhawat Hussain (retd) witnessed the signing ceremony as the chief guest at the meeting room of the ministry.
The adviser said that Mongla Port has been playing an important role in the country's national economy.
Although dredging of the Pashur channel is a big challenge but it’s crucial for development of the port.
He said the project was taken up at a cost of about Taka 1,600 crore to solve the problem.
The dredging will help increasing efficiency of the Mongla Port to make it into a regional hub. In addition, uninterrupted coal transportation will be ensured for Rampal Power Plant, he added.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the five year project project on January 8, 2025.
Senior shipping secretary Mohammad Yusuf, Chairman of Mongla Port Authority Rear Admiral Shaheen Rahman, senior officials and representatives of the Bangladesh Navy were present at the event.
