DHAKA, Aug 13, 2025 (BSS)- Islami Andolon Bangladesh (IAB) today submitted a seven-point proposal to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A K M Nasir Uddin to ensure free, fair, and credible elections in the country.
In the proposal, the party demanded holding all national and local elections following necessary constitutional and institutional reforms in accordance with the July National Charter.
The proposal was formally presented during a meeting with the CEC at the Election Commission headquarters in the capital’s Agargaon.
The four-member delegation was led by Islami Andolon Bangladesh Secretary General Yunus Ahmad. Other members were Presidium Member Professor Ashraf Ali Akon, Senior Joint Secretary General and Spokesperson Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman, and Joint Secretary General Engineer Ashraful Alam.
In its proposal, the party called for holding local government elections prior to parliamentary polls to prevent the misuse of party influence and power.
It also urged the Election Commission to provide proper training and directives to all election officials and law enforcement agencies to maintain neutrality, in default to face strict legal action for any failure to perform their duties.
The party demanded that the armed forces should be deployed not only as a striking force but in every polling station.
IAB also advocated for introducing the Proportional Representation (PR) system in the election what the party said only way to ensure full reflection of public opinion.
Furthermore, the party proposed that the Awami League and its allied parties should be declared disqualified and their registration must be revoked. In addition the individuals involved in corruption, terrorism, extortion, land grabbing, tender manipulation, and murder should be disqualified from contesting elections.
Following the meeting, Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman told reporters that the existing electoral system must be abolished and replaced with the PR system, which he described as a growing public demand.
He said that the party would take this demand to the people, with the goal of ensuring an effective, credible, and participatory election.
He further alleged that a level playing field is still absent for fair elections, saying party’s participation in the upcoming national elections would depend on the electoral environment.
He added that without implementation of the PR system, it would be difficult to hold a free and impartial election.
IAB believes that implementation of these proposals would lead to a positive transformation in the country’s political landscape and restore public confidence in the electoral process.
