KHULNA, July 26, 2025 (BSS) - The Disappearance Commission today warned that enforced disappearances could re-emerge if those responsible, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, are not held accountable.
Commission members Sajjad Hossain and Dr. Nabila Idris said destruction of evidence, threats to witnesses, and lack of cooperation are major obstacles to justice. They also noted that several senior law enforcement and intelligence officials allegedly involved have fled the country after the 2024 July Uprising.
Despite these challenges, the commission is continuing efforts to collect information and ensure justice for victims.
The remarks were made during a seminar titled "Combating Enforced Disappearances: How to Move Forward" at Khulna University, organized by Odhikar with support from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
UN official Zahid Hossain, Odhikar Director A.S.M. Nasir Uddin Elan, Khulna University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Md. Rezaul Karim, and other legal and academic representatives attended the event.
