CHANDPUR, July 3, 2025 (BSS) - Police arrested the main accused of Azad Sarker murder case from Fatulla police station area of Narayanganj district last night, Chandpur district police media cell said at night.

The arrested was Monir Hossain Mithu Kazi, 52, son of late Hendu Mia Kazi, a resident of Toragarh area in Hajiganj upazila of the district. He is the joint convener of Hajiganj Municipality Awami League and the president of Ward No. 8 Awami League.

Earlier, Hajiganj Upazila Awami League president Helaluddin, former Municipal Chhatra League president Shukur Alam Shuvo, Municipal Chhatra League general secretary Mehedi Hasan Rabbi, Mobarak Kazi were arrested in the case.

On August 4 last year, during the anti-discrimination student-public movement, BNP leader and Ward No- 8 Chhatra Dal president Ahmed Kabir Himel's father Azad Sarkar, 52, was brutally hacked and injured in front of the Hajiganj municipality. 

Later, he died while undergoing treatment in Cumilla.

The deceased's son Himel filed a case with Hajiganj Police Station on August 14 against 15 leaders and activists of Awami League and its affiliated organizations and 25 other unnamed people.

Chandpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Md. Lutfur Rahman said the accused will be brought to Chandpur from Narayanganj. After taking further legal action, he will be produced before the court.
