PIROJPUR, July 2, 2025 (BSS)- The Ziaur Rahman Foundation (ZRF)today planted
hundreds of Neem trees alongside a canal which deeply connected to Shaheed
President Ziaur Rahman legacy near Chalisha Bazar in Tona Union under Sadar
upazila of the district.
Organizing Secretary of the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) Hafiz Al Asad
Saeed Khan, also a director of Ziaur Rahman Foundation, arranged the week-
long event to mark the 44th death anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur
Rahman.
Saeed Khan stated, "The Neem tree plantation programme has commenced in the
area deeply intertwined with the memory of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. He
came here on May 21, 1981 to inaugurate this Bharani Canal. Also, it was the
same place where he was injured to operate a water pump."
Professor Forhad Halim Donor, executive director of the ZRF, virtually
delivered a speech as the chief guest at the Neem tree plantation ceremony.
Convener of the District BNP Principal Alamgir Hossain, Member Secretary of
the District BNP Gazi Wahiduzzaman Lovelu, Joint Convener District BNP Sheikh
Riaz Uddin Rana, President of the District Workers' Party Bir Muktijoddha
Abdus Salam Baten, Convener of the District Volunteer Party Moniruzzaman
Moni, Joint Convener of the District Juba Dal Tanzid Hasan Shaon, President
of the District Chatradal Salahuddin Talukder Kumar and its General Secretary
Mahmudul Hasan Shahin were present, among others, in the event.
Ziaur Rahman visited Pirojpur on a state tour on May 21, 1981, just nine days
before his assassination in Chattogram, to inaugurate a newly-excavated
canal.
During his visit to Chalisha Bazar, he personally started an irrigation pump
to inaugurate the canal. However, the pump's handle slipped, injuring his leg
and causing it to bleed. This incident remains vivid in the memories of
Chalisha residents.
