DHAKA, July 1, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam today said a smear campaign is going on against BNP that the party is not accepting reforms and that's why reforms are not being implemented.

"There is a campaign in the media as well as social media BNP is not accepting reforms. But BNP was the first to place its reform outline before the nation," he told a discussion at the China Friendship International Conference Center here.

BNP organized the discussion marking the first anniversary of the July-August Mass Uprising as BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and acting chairman Tarique Rahman also addressed it on virtual platform.

The BNP Secretary General said the words of reforms that are coming today were spoken by BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Vision 2026 in 2016.

"All the political parties that we agitated together then gave 27 points in 2022 which was later transformed into 31 points. So we were the first to talk about reforms," he said.

Mentioning that there has been a consensus on several issues of reforms, he said, "We have agreed on the Prime Minister's tenure for 10 years, we have said that there will be a bicameral parliament. We have also talked about the balance of power between the President and the Prime Minister, making the judiciary completely independent, and bringing reforms in the economic sector. Don't judge those issues that way, explain them. Just because BNP is a big party, blaming only BNP will not be helpful for reforms."
