Power generation snapped due to deep depression in Cumilla

CUMILLA, June 1, 2025 (BSS) – Deep depression formed over the Bay of Bengal severely disrupted power generation in the district, leaving hundreds of people without electricity for two days. 

Comilla Palli Bidyut Samity said a total of 62 power transformers have been damaged and 84 electric poles were broken in the last few days, due to the heavy rainfall and gusty winds caused by the depression.

As such, power outages occurred in various areas of the district since Thursday night, which could not be overcome till today (June 01). The authorities are working sincerely to restore power in the affected areas.
 
According to Comilla Palli Bidyut Samity -1, 2, 3 and 4, 84 electric poles were broken in the cyclone. Around 62 transformers have been damaged and electricity wires were snapped in about 450 places. 

Apart from this, there were power outages in over 200 places with poles leaning, cross arms broken in over 100 places, insulators broken in over 150 places and meters broken in over 300 places. 

A resident of Srimantapur village in Chandina upazila said after the power connection was cut off at 11 pm on Thursday due to the gusty winds, the area did not have power until 7:30 pm on Saturday.

The Power Development Board and four Palli Bidyut Samity distribute power to 17 upazilas including Cumilla metropolis and two more upazilas in two neighboring districts. 

However, power distribution is normal in the Cumilla metropolitan area under the Power Development Board.
