CID starts nationwide operation against online gambling

DHAKA, May 27, 2025 (BSS) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Bangladesh Police has launched a nationwide operation against online gambling and betting in accordance with the newly issued Cyber Security Ordinance, 2025.

"The CID is working professionally to identify and bring to justice those involved in such online crimes," said a CID press release.

So far, the CID has identified more than 1,000 Mobile Banking (MFS) agents with evidence of involvement in online gambling transactions, it said.

"Steps are being taken to take legal action against these agents. The list of agents involved in the crime has already been sent to Bangladesh Bank for cancellation of licenses and fines," it said.

The CID has called upon all not to participate in online gambling and betting and to make families, especially the younger generation, aware of this.

All are requested to contact the CID's Cyber Police Center to provide information about suspicious apps, websites or mobile numbers - 01320010146, 01320010147, 01320010148.

Online gambling is currently being conducted using mobile apps, websites and social media, where participants are getting addicted to gambling in the hope of earning easy money.

As a result, many are becoming financially bankrupt and destitute and are getting involved in various criminal activities, domestic violence, and even tragic incidents like suicide.

According to Section 20 of the Cyber Security Ordinance, 2025, online gambling, creating and promoting gambling apps or portals is a punishable offense.

This offense is punishable by imprisonment for up to 2 years, a fine of up to one crore taka, or both.

In addition, gambling-related transactions, fraud or forgery have also been declared prohibited under Sections 21 and 22.
