DHAKA, Feb 3, 2025, (BSS)- Chhatra Janatar Ovyutthan: Notun Pothe Bangladesh (Student-People’s Uprising : Bangladesh on a new path), a research-based book by Professor Al Masud Hasanuzzaman, provides an in-depth analysis of the July uprising, its causes, consequences, and long-term impact on Bangladesh’s political landscape.
Published by Prothoma Prokashon in 2024, the 176-page book has garnered significant attention from readers, offering a comprehensive account on one of the country’s most defining moments. In an interview with BSS, Prof. Hasanuzzaman shared insights into his motivations, research methodologies, and key messages embedded in his book.
Discussing his inspiration for writing this book, Prof. Hasanuzzaman emphasized the necessity of documenting historical events to shape the nation's future. He explained that the 2024 mass uprising is an undeniable part of Bangladesh’s history and that analyzing past movements is essential for understanding the country’s political trajectory. His research incorporates content analysis and descriptive methodologies within a theoretical framework. He relied on primary and secondary sources and conducted interviews to supplement his findings with firsthand accounts.
The book explores the roots of the uprising, the crisis of democracy, and the role of students and political entities in shaping the movement. It also examines the involvement of various institutions, including law enforcement agencies, media and military. Prof. Hasanuzzaman highlights the multidimensional impact of the uprising, addressing contemporary issues such as threats to the interim government, the work of reform commissions, and barriers to policy implementation. He stresses the importance of collaborative action among political parties, civil society, and various groups to prevent authoritarianism from taking root again.
While the book offers a comprehensive overview, Prof. Hasanuzzaman acknowledges that research is an evolving process. Encouraging hopes for further academic exploration, he said, “Future MPhil and PhD researchers will build upon this work, and this could be used as a primary text for further investigations into the uprising.”
A renowned political analyst and writer, Prof. Al Masud Hasanuzzaman is a retired faculty member from Jahangirnagar University’s Department of Government and Politics. He completed his BA (Honours) and MA in Political Science from Dhaka University in the late 1970s, earned an MSS in Development Studies from the University of Bath, UK in 1984, and obtained a PhD from Dhaka University in 1995. He was also a Senior Fulbright Scholar at Columbia University, USA, during the 1991-92 academic sessions.
