DHAKA, July 11, 2025 (BSS) - The 90th birthday of Al Mahmud, the poet of love, affection, nature and prayer, was observed today.
Family members, admirers and well-wishers of Al Mahmud paid tributes to him placing floral wreaths on his grave at Dakshin Morail in Brahmanbaria in the morning.
He was born on this day in 1936 in Maurail, Brahmanbaria.
Fans and followers of the poet celebrated the day in separate events.
Marking the day, a discussion, remembrance and recitation program were held at the International Mother Language Institute in the capital at 4 pm.
Eminent figures of art and literature were present at this programme organized by Kaler Kalas and Kaler Dhwani.
Besides, Bangla Academy sources said that a special seminar will be organized in July to mark the poet's birth anniversary. Poetry, memoirs and discussions have been organized at the MBA building of Dhaka University at 4 pm on July 12.
Meanwhile, the poet's fans have demanded that the poet's birth anniversary be celebrated on a nationally.
They said Al Mahmud was greatly despised and ignored during the past fascist period. Many of Al Mahmud's poems greatly inspired the students and the public during the July Revolution, they added.
He passed away in Dhaka on February 15, 2019.
