DHAKA, Sept 9, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Law Association UK has formed a new trust fund to support students of the Law Department of Dhaka University (DU).
At a ceremony held at the meeting room adjacent to the Vice-Chancellor's (VC) Office today, President of the Bangladesh Law Association UK Muhammad Mujibur Rahman and its General Secretary Mahmuda Chowdhury handed over a cheque for Tk 27 lakh to DU VC Professor Dr. A B M Obaidul Islam to establish the trust fund.
DU Treasurer Professor M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury presided over the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Obaidul Islam commended the initiative taken by the Bangladesh Law Association UK.
"The trust fund would play an important role, particularly in supporting physically or mentally challenged and financially disadvantaged students," he said.
He said opportunities for higher education would be further expanded if former students of Dhaka University, well-wishers and various institutions and organizations came forward to support financially disadvantaged students.
Under the trust fund, scholarships will be awarded annually to 15 physically or mentally challenged or financially disadvantaged students among those regularly studying from first-year LL.B. (Honours) to LL.M. at the Department of Law of the university.
The scholarship programme will begin from the 2026-2027 academic year.
Law faculty dean Professor Dr. Muhammad Ekramul Haque, Law Department Chairman Professor Dr Mohammad Towhidul Islam, Acting Registrar Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed and others concerned were also present.
