DHAKA, Sept 1, 2026 (BSS) - Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, today said the government must ensure justice by establishing the rule of law, as Bangladesh has restored democracy through the latest impartial national parliamentary election. 

He made the remarks at a musical evening and dinner hosted by him at the LD Hall of Bangladesh Parliament to welcome Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary General Anda Filip to Bangladesh, said a press release of parliament secretariat.

Referring to the country's political situation, the Speaker said various illegal activities, including extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances and money laundering, had spread during the 15-year rule of the Awami League.

"Democracy has been restored in Bangladesh through the latest impartial national parliamentary election," he said.

The Speaker said the present government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is working to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the people.

He said the government must ensure justice by establishing the rule of law.

The Speaker said the IPU has played an important role in protecting human rights and strengthening parliamentary relations among countries since its establishment in 1889.

He also said the IPU has an important role in addressing climate change and protecting the environment.

"As Bangladesh is naturally vulnerable to environmental disasters, the IPU can play an important role in this regard," he added

The Speaker said developing countries like Bangladesh are facing adverse impacts from the global energy crisis and the war in the Middle East.

He said the IPU can effectively influence such challenges within democratic structures by developing parliamentary leadership across the world.

IPU Secretary General Anda Filip said a democratic parliament elected by the people has been established in Bangladesh.

She said the people exercised their voting rights to improve their livelihoods and protect their human dignity.

"Parliament is the foundation of democracy," she said, adding that parliament must play a guardianship role in protecting human rights and the rule of law.

Later, artists from the Birishiri Academy in Netrokona staged a cultural programme.

The Speaker and invited guests enjoyed the musical evening. The IPU secretary general later joined the dinner.

Deputy Speaker of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Barrister Kayser Kamal, MPs and invited guests attended the programme.
