DHAKA, Aug 27, 2026 (BSS) - China has agreed to implement a Taka 10,000 crore modern housing project to rehabilitate residents of Korail, Sat Tala and Bhashantek slums under Dhaka-17 constituency, State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam said.

The project, proposed through the Economic Relations Division (ERD), will be implemented in phases, he said.

Small-unit flats will be built in 20-storey buildings, allowing slum dwellers to live rent-free while paying only utility bills (gas, water and electricity bills), he added.

Speaking after a meeting between Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen and LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Shahe Alam said China would invest in waste-to-energy, renewable energy and slums development.

Electricity generation from waste at Dhaka North City Corporation’s Aminbazar landfill, through Chinese company CMEC, is expected to connect to the national grid by August-September 2028, he added.

A tripartite agreement will be signed in Beijing on September 2, he said, adding that a project at the Dhaka South City Corporation landfill is being pursued with an organization named Power China.

China has also assured financing, through a loan or grant, for completing the Dasherkandi Sewage Treatment Plant, aimed at expanding sewerage services to Gulshan, Baridhara and Banani.

China has further expressed interest in rooftop solar projects on government buildings and assured support for Mongla Port development and a linkage between Mongla and Chittagong ports, he said.
