DHAKA, Aug 12, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit today said the government has been giving all-out efforts to tackle the ongoing gas and electricity crisis.

"We are taking our utmost efforts to tackle the crisis. It is difficult for us to give a specific timeline. But hope that the power situation would improve to some extent from this evening," he told journalists at Bangladesh Secretariat.

Expressing regret over the severe public sufferings, the state minister said the situation had become complicated as LNG could not be unloaded at Summit Terminal due to adverse weather and Excelerate Energy's Terminal could not operate at full capacity.

Explaining the current gas supply plan through the two terminals, Amit said Excelerate terminal is currently operating at around 50 percent capacity due to technical fault, while a LNG cargo could not be unloaded at Summit Terminal because of rough weather in the Bay of Bengal.

"Once the weather returns to normal, we will be able to discharge the gas and, InshaAllah, gas supply will also return to normal," he added.

Regarding electricity situation, Amit said the government adopted a strategy from yesterday evening and expressed hope that the situation would improve soon.

He said that Bangladesh sent a letter to the Malaysian authorities for cooperation to ensure gas supply, while he and the concerned minister held a virtual meeting with them. Later a Bangladesh delegation visited Malaysia.

"We are working on Malaysian proposals and hope to receive at least one LNG cargo from Malaysia," the state minister said.

Regarding the initiative to import LNG through ISO tanks, Amit said it is a process and the availability of the required ISO tanks in the market. 

The government has been working on all the alternatives available to tackle the crisis, he said, adding that opinions are being sought from experts and businessmen to address the issue.

Referring to a seminar held at the Dhaka Club on Tuesday, the state minister said the government had sought experts' opinions and was also consulting businesspeople. 

Keeping public sufferings in mind, he said the government has been giving every possible effort.

Amit said it is not possible to increase domestic gas production overnight, it as a long-term issue. He said past policy decisions by previous governments had also contributed to the current crisis.
