JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Aug 6, 2026 (BSS) - Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have temporarily expelled a student over allegations of making derogatory and undesirable remarks about the July uprising on social media and alleged involvement with a banned organisation.

The decision was taken against Sharafat Sharik, a 54th-batch (2024-25 session) student of the Department of Archaeology and a resident of Sher-e-Bangla A. K. Fazlul Huq Hall, said a university press release today.

The press release said the student was temporarily expelled under Section 4(1)(b) of the Jahangirnagar University Students' Discipline Ordinance-2018.

It said a case has also been filed against him with Ashulia Police Station over the allegations.

Meanwhile, the university has formed a five-member probe committee to investigate the allegations, identify any individuals involved and uncover all relevant facts before submitting recommendations.

Professor Dr Md Abdul Halim of the Department of Botany has been made the convener of the committee.

Other members are Prof Dr Abu Sayeed Md Mostafizur Rahman of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Prof Dr Md Kamruzzaman of the Department of Zoology, Associate Prof Abdus Sattar of the Department of Philosophy and ICT Cell System Analyst Md Rezaul Alam, who will serve as the member secretary.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within 15 working days.
