DHAKA, Aug 6, 2026 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Embassy in Cairo has observed July Mass Uprising Day with due solemnity, commemorating the sacrifices of the martyrs and reaffirming the ideals of democracy, justice and national unity.

The programme, held on Wednesday at the embassy premises in the Egyptian capital, began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by special prayers for the martyrs of the July Mass Uprising, the speedy recovery of the injured and the continued peace and prosperity of Bangladesh, according to a press release received here today.

A one-minute silence was observed in memory of the martyrs of the July Mass Uprising, while messages from the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read out.

A documentary on the July Mass Uprising was screened before a discussion meeting, while a photo exhibition highlighting the uprising was also organised at the embassy premises.

The programme was attended by Bangladeshi officials serving at various universities and international organisations in Egypt, eminent academics, media personalities, women entrepreneurs, prominent Bangladeshi businesspersons, students of different universities, professionals, workers and members of the Bangladeshi community.

Speakers at the discussion included President of Ittihad, the organisation of Bangladeshi students at Al-Azhar University, Nomanul Karim, Cairo University student Al Amin Akand and Yasmina Textile Manager Ibrahim Hassan.

Delivering the concluding remarks, Charge d'Affaires Goutam Kumar De paid deep tribute to the martyrs of the July Mass Uprising and gratefully recalled the sacrifices of those who were injured, permanently disabled or lost their eyesight during the movement.

He also thanked Bangladeshi expatriates for their support during the uprising, saying the July Mass Uprising was a collective struggle to establish a society free from discrimination and corruption while ensuring freedom of expression and restoring people's power.

Recalling the glorious history of the independence movements in the Indian subcontinent, he said the extraordinary courage and sacrifices of thousands of people during the July Mass Uprising had created a rare opportunity to strengthen national unity and advance state reforms.

The charge d'affaires said the present government is working to fulfil the aspirations of the people by building a new Bangladesh founded on justice and equality, urging all Bangladeshis to contribute from their respective positions to achieving that goal.

Following the discussion, guests visited the photo exhibition, where the charge d'affaires explained the background of the photographs depicting different phases of the July Mass Uprising.

The programme concluded with a cultural performance featuring a group song accompanied by dance, followed by traditional Bangladeshi refreshments for the invited guests.
