DHAKA, Aug 05, 2026 (BSS)- Foundation stone of the July Memorial, a monument dedicated to honoring those martyred during the July 2024 mass uprising, was formally laid on the Dhaka University (DU) campus today.
DU Vice-Chancellor Professor ABM Obaidul Islam officially inaugurated the foundation stone this morning as part of the university’s daylong programs observing the second anniversary of the historic movement.
DU pro-vice-chancellors, the treasurer, faculty deans, the proctor, teachers, officers, and students were attended the program.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Prof Obaidul Islam highlighted the historic significance of the movement, describing the July mass uprising as a major turning point in Bangladesh's history.
"Two years ago today, Bangladesh entered a new chapter through the July uprising. The supreme sacrifices of the martyrs made it possible to achieve a new Bangladesh," he said.
Paying rich tributes to all those who laid down their lives and suffered injuries during the anti-authoritarian movement, the Vice-Chancellor prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls.
He emphasized that the July Memorial is being established specifically to preserve the memory and legacy of the uprising's martyrs for future generations.
Prof Obaidul alleged that ousted Awami League government suppressed fundamental democratic rights and disregarded public aspirations throughout its rule.
He also expressed strong disapproval of the role played by the campus administration at that time, stating that dissenting voices faced severe repression within DU.
The Vice-Chancellor urged students, faculty, and the public to remain vigilant to ensure that fascism can never re-emerge in the country.
