DHAKA, July 12, 2026 (BSS) - Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, MP, today expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of former Speaker Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar.
In a condolence message, the Speaker prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his deepest sympathy to the bereaved family members, said a press release of the parliament secretariat.
Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar passed away at a hospital in the capital today at the age of 94. He was born on December 1, 1931, at Noyabari village under Tetulia upazila of Panchagarh district.
He obtained his Master's degree and LLB from the University of Dhaka before leaving for the United Kingdom in 1961 for higher studies.
He later earned the degree of Barrister-at-Law from Lincoln's Inn in London. After returning home, he joined the legal profession and established himself as a distinguished constitutional, civil and criminal law expert at the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.
Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar served as the Speaker of the 8th Jatiya Sangsad from October 28, 2001, to January 25, 2009.
During his long political career, he also held several important ministerial portfolios in the cabinets of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
He served as State Minister for Public Works and Urban Development, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, State Minister for Land, Minister for Education, and Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
