DHAKA, July 7, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, MP today said local government institutions are playing an important role in the country's overall development, infrastructure construction, expansion of public services and implementation of sustainable development at the local level.
He made the remarks while conducting a budget debriefing session organised under the "Budget Helpdesk-2026" at the oath room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, said a press release.
The state minister outlined the legal framework, responsibilities and scope of work of local government institutions, including Zila Parishads, Upazila Parishads, Union Parishads, municipalities and city corporations.
He also gave a detailed explanation of budgetary allocations for the local government sector in the national budget, sector-wise allocation of funds under the development fund, and the existing policies and guidelines related to the sector.
He stressed the need to strengthen the capacity of local government institutions, ensure accountability and enhance effective coordination to ensure proper implementation of the national budget.
During the question-and-answer session held after the presentation, the state minister responded to various questions from Members of Parliament and provided necessary explanations on local government administration, budget allocations, implementation of development projects and other related issues.
Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam, along with Members of Parliament, took part in the debriefing session organised under the "Budget Helpdesk-2026".
