RAJSHAHI, July 1, 2026 (BSS) – As part of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s initiative to plant 25 crore trees across the country in five years, a programme to plant fruit-bearing, timber and medicinal trees was formally inaugurated on the Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) campus.
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton inaugurated the tree plantation programme by planting a sapling on the RUET campus today. A prayer and munajat were also held on the occasion.
Speaking as the chief guest at the event, RCC Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton said the government has undertaken the ‘25 crore tree plantation in five years’ programme as part of its election pledge to protect environmental balance and combat the adverse impacts of climate change.
To implement the programme, Rajshahi City Corporation has taken up a plan to plant 2.5 lakh trees in the next one year.
In the first phase, the plantation of nearly 53,000 saplings has already begun. Various educational institutions have also come forward to plant trees.
The RCC Administrator urged city residents and people from all walks of life to plant more trees and called upon everyone to take responsibility for planting and caring for at least one tree.
RUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr S M Abdur Razzak, Student Welfare Adviser Professor Dr Md Rabiul Islam, Registrar Arif Ahmad Chowdhury, Chief Engineer Md Shahadat Hossain, among others, were present.
