DINAJPUR, June 12, 2026 (BSS) – Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Prof Dr Abu Zafar Md. Zahid Hossain today said Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman played a significant role in advancing Bangladesh's health, education, agriculture, garments and remittance sectors.
He made the remarks while inaugurating a view-exchange meeting and scientific seminar with affiliated bodies of the National Heart Foundation at the campus of Zia Heart Foundation and Research Institute in Dinajpur.
The minister said Ziaur Rahman had taken various initiatives for education and women's empowerment and contributed to the development of the country's garment industry.
Referring to the Zia Heart Foundation, he urged all concerned not to politicise the institution and to consider it a public asset.
"The government has allocated Tk 49 crore for the development of the foundation. Further proposals should be submitted according to the hospital's needs to expand healthcare services," he said.
Dr Zahid also stressed the importance of preserving the identity and objectives of the institution, saying it was established in memory of Ziaur Rahman and should continue to serve the people of the region.
He called on the media to highlight the government's development activities and role in public welfare.
Speaking on the occasion, Public Service Commission member Prof Dr ATM Farid Uddin urged all stakeholders to work together beyond differences of opinion to improve healthcare services and overall development in the district.
President of National Heart Foundation Prof Dr Khandaker Abdul Awal Rizvi said Tk 49 crore had been allocated for purchasing medical equipment and suggested introducing open-heart surgery services at the hospital.
Among others, local lawmakers, senior government officials, physicians and distinguished citizens attended the programme.
