DHAKA, June 11, 2026 (BSS) - The government has announced a special discount on train fares for senior citizens aged 65 and above and physically challenged individuals to make Bangladesh Railway’s passenger services more people-friendly, accessible, and inclusive.
The Ministry of Railways recently issued a circular in this regard.
According to the circular, passengers aged 65 and above will receive a 25 percent discount on the base price of tickets, subject to certain conditions.
The age will be automatically verified based on National Identity Card (NID) data.
On the other hand, disabled persons holding the ‘Suborna’ identity card under the Ministry of Social Welfare will continue to receive the existing 50 percent discount on ‘Sulov’ or ‘Shovon’ classes of intercity trains.
Additionally, a new 25 percent discount will be provided on tickets for all air-conditioned (AC) classes.
However, service charges, VAT, and other fees will remain applicable as per existing rules.
This facility for senior citizens will be available through both online and counter channels.
To avail this, passengers must be registered in the Bangladesh Railway ticketing system and complete their NID verification.
According to the circular, a senior passenger can enjoy 25 percent discount facility a maximum of two times per week.
If a discounted ticket is refunded, it will be excluded from the weekly count, allowing the passenger another opportunity to claim the discount within that same week.
Furthermore, if a senior citizen travels with a companion, regular fares will apply to the companion.
However, if the companion is also aged 65 or above, a maximum of one additional senior passenger per booking will also get the discount facility.
In this case, the companion must be verified separately through their own registered mobile number.
For disabled passengers, this facility is currently available only when purchasing tickets from station counters.
In the future, initiatives will be taken to introduce this facility in the online ticketing system as well, in coordination with the Ministry of Social Welfare.
The Ministry of Railways circular noted that this new fare discount facility has been made effective from May 25 last.
