DHAKA, June 8, 2026 (BSS) - Political Officer of the United States Embassy to Bangladesh James Stewart made a courtesy call on Chief Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad, Md Nurul Islam, at the Chief Whip’s office in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban today.

During the meeting, they discussed in details the ongoing budget session of Parliament, parliamentary activities, and the formation of a Bangladesh–United States Parliamentary Caucus.

The Chief Whip said the government is working relentlessly to ensure the best and proper utilization of the country’s limited resources.

He added that the main objective of the government is to improve the living standards of the people and ensure sustainable development through effective implementation of the national budget, said a press release.

He further noted that, following 17 years of democratic movement and struggle, a functional Parliament has been formed reflecting the aspirations of the people.

In the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, some 260 new members have been elected, and this is their first budget session.
Nurul Islam said the new members are working sincerely to learn parliamentary rules, procedures, and traditions.

He also observed that public interest in parliamentary proceedings, which was previously comparatively low, has now increased as citizens are regularly following the sessions—an encouraging development for democratic practice.

Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Md. Nurul Islam also emphasized strengthening parliamentary democracy through active participation and institutional learning.

James Stewart said that there exists a long-standing friendly and cooperative relationship between Bangladesh and the United States.

He noted that the proposed Bangladesh–US Parliamentary Caucus would further strengthen communication, exchange of experience, and cooperation between lawmakers of the two countries. He also praised the Chief Whip’s role in establishing an effective and accountable Parliament for the people.

Officials from the US Embassy in Bangladesh and relevant officials from the Parliament Secretariat were also present at the meeting.
