DHAKA, May 30, 2026 (BSS) - Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has removed more waste than its predetermined target of removing waste from cattle market and sacrificial animal waste generated during the Eid-ul-Azha.

DSCC administrator Md. Abdus Salam said a total of 36,086 tonnes of waste were finally dumped at the Matuail Landfill over the three days since Eid.

The target was 33,942 tonnes, meaning the corporation successfully removed waste beyond its planned target, he said while speaking at a briefing at the Nagar Bhaban here today.

He said that a total of 13,453 sanitation workers, including DSCC personnel and PCSP workers, participated in the massive operation.

In addition, 2,117 vehicles, including 382 special-purpose machines and equipment, were used for waste transportation.

A total of 14,814 tonnes of waste were removed on the first day, 8,977 tonnes on the second day, and 12,295 tonnes on the third day.

He said under normal circumstances, between 3,200 and 3,500 tonnes of waste are removed daily in Dhaka, but the volume increases several times during Eid.

Managing such a huge amount of waste with limited manpower and resources was a major challenge, he added.

Salam said cooperation from city residents made the task easier, as many people performed animal sacrifices at designated locations and disposed of waste in specified areas.

However, he noted that full public awareness has yet to be achieved.

He said 17,315 animals were sacrificed at 357 designated locations under the jurisdiction of DSCC.

Alongside waste management, the cleanup of waste from 11 temporary cattle markets has nearly been completed, he said.

However, some market leaseholders failed to remove waste on time, causing public inconvenience, he added.

As a result, DSCC has decided to forfeit their security deposits and blacklist them, the administrator said.

He added that stricter measures, including increasing security deposit requirements, will be introduced in the future to prevent such irregularities.

Addressing city residents, he urged them to report any uncollected waste through the designated hotline, assuring that efforts would be made to remove it within one hour.

Expressing regret for any temporary inconvenience, he thanked residents for their cooperation and called for continued public participation in building a cleaner Dhaka.
