CHATTOGRAM, May 30, 2025 (BSS) - Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) Affairs State Minister Barrister Mir Mohammed Helal Uddin today said Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman had no desire or obsession for power.

"Shaheed Zia proclaimed the independence (in 1971 Liberation War), engaged in combat on the battlefield and then returned to his profession after the war. He fought solely for the nation. He possessed no desire or obsession for power," said Helal.

The state minister made the remarks at a programme marking the Shaheed Zia's 45th martyrdom anniversary, hosted by city unit of Jatiyabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) at the first grave site in Zianagar, Rangunia upazila of the district.

"In reality, those who fought valiantly did not experience the fruits of power. Instead, the genuine freedom fighters following independence became victims of exploitation and deprivation. Shaheed Zia suppressed the regime of plunder that emerged post-1971 and reinstated a regime focused on development," said Mir Helal.

Mir Helal said the Awami fascist government established a regime of plunder in the nation under the guise of development, a result of the conspiracies orchestrated by the malevolent circles of the 1/11 era. This fascist government has dismantled all the developmental frameworks of the state and has severely weakened the country's economy.

He said, "Bangladesh is moving forward in the direction of development under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Power doesn't belong to the state, but to the people. The current government wants to ensure the real empowerment and economic liberation of the people."

JCD city unit convener Saiful Alam presided over the event. Senior leaders of BNP and JCD, among others, addressed the function.
