DHAKA, May 25, 2026 (BSS) - Outgoing Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma has expressed optimism over the future of Bangladesh-India relations, saying the two neighbouring countries must pursue a future-oriented partnership based on mutual interest, respect and shared prosperity.
In a farewell note titled "Aabaar Dekha Hobe" before leaving Dhaka to assume his next assignment as India's Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, Verma described Bangladesh-India relations as "special and unique", rooted in shared geography, history, culture and the sacrifices of the 1971 Liberation War.
Reflecting on his nearly four-year tenure in Dhaka, the Indian envoy said both countries had witnessed several transitions during the period, each bringing different perspectives and interlocutors in bilateral engagement.
Despite challenges at times, he termed his tenure in Bangladesh "enriching and rewarding", recalling the warmth and affection he and his wife received from people across the country.
Verma said Bangladesh and India are bound by strong societal, cultural and emotional connections alongside growing economic interdependence.
"A prosperous Bangladesh is in India's interest, as much as a prosperous India is in the interest of Bangladesh," he noted.
Highlighting the transformation of both nations over the past 55 years, the envoy said Bangladesh and India are now more capable, connected and aspirational societies playing vital roles in ensuring peace, stability and development in the region.
He stressed that cooperation between the two countries remains crucial in addressing common challenges, including climate change and environmental sustainability, while underscoring the importance of regional integration led by the region's two largest economies.
Calling for a "new, future-oriented agenda" in bilateral engagement, Verma said such a framework should reflect the changing capabilities, aspirations and development priorities of both countries and be driven by cultural and economic linkages.
He also said geographical proximity between Bangladesh and India should be viewed as an opportunity rather than a liability and urged stakeholders from both countries to work together to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
The outgoing envoy said he would leave Bangladesh with optimism about the future of the relationship and with cherished memories of the friendships developed during his stay in the country.
