AL-era irregularities in local govt division to be probed

DHAKA, May 23, 2026 (BSS) – State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, MP, today said the government has formed a committee to investigate alleged corruption and irregularities committed in the Local Government Division and its subordinate agencies during the Awami League tenure from 2009 to 2026.

Speaking at a press conference at the Secretariat here, he said the seven-member committee, headed by the Director General of the Local Government Division, has been asked to submit its report within 60 working days.

The state minister said the investigation would also cover activities carried out during the interim government period.

He said that during the tenure of the interim government, former adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain approved a project file without the signature of the secretary concerned.

Referring to alleged irregularities in development projects in Pirojpur, Mir Shahe Alam said around Tk 6 crore had been withdrawn after tenders were awarded, despite no visible work being carried out.

“As a result, all development projects in Pirojpur have remained stalled for the past two years,” he said.

The state minister said the government would soon conduct an on-site inspection in the district and take steps to resume the suspended projects.

He also said that similar corruption and irregularities took place in road and bridge construction projects in several other districts across the country.
