DHAKA, May 21, 2026 (BSS) - Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the government is doing everything necessary to maintain law and order, ensure public safety and meet people’s expectations for peace and security across the country.

“We are trying to do whatever is necessary to maintain law and order, ensure public safety and fulfill public expectations for peace,” he said. 

He made the remarks while replying to a question at a press briefing at the Home Ministry conference room here.  

The minister said law enforcement agencies are carrying out continuous drives against crime, terrorism, extortion, drugs and organized criminal activities while also working on long-term reforms within the police system.

He said police and other law enforcement agencies have intensified proactive operations to prevent crimes before those occur, including anti-drug, anti-extortion and anti-terror drives based on intelligence information.

The minister said the government has achieved notable success in recent operations in different parts of the country, including Dhaka, Cox’s Bazar, Ukhiya and Teknaf, where many listed and long-absconding accused were arrested.

Ahmed said the trial in the rape and murder case of eight-year-old schoolgirl Ramisa will be completed swiftly through quick submission of the charge sheet. 

He said police have taken strict action in all heinous crimes since the BNP government assumed office, ensuring rapid arrests and investigations. 

Ahmed added that prime accused Sohel and his wife were arrested within 24 hours, and the accused has already given a confessional statement before the court.

Highlighting recent police activities in the capital, he said special block raids in Mohammadpur, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and Adabar led to the arrest of several professional criminals and wanted suspects who had long evaded law enforcement.

He also mentioned recent operations in Jatrabari and Tejgaon areas where dozens of accused involved in various crimes were arrested.

Referring to several recent high-profile criminal cases, Ahmed said law enforcement agencies acted quickly and made arrest suspects in rape and murder cases in different districts, including Cumilla, Bogura, Kapasia and Dhaka’s Manda area.

The home minister said the government is also working on reforming the police system, although many changes would require time.

“The government is only around three months old. Reforming everything and preparing policies for future implementation takes time,” he said.

He added that despite limitations, the government has already taken significant action and hoped the public and media would acknowledge those efforts.
