DHAKA, May 20, 2026 (BSS) - Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed today reaffirmed the force's "zero tolerance" policy against crime, terrorism and extortionists to ensure a safer and more livable capital city.
"We are determined to strengthen law and order and ensure public safety in line with the government's commitment," he said.
He made the remarks while speaking his maiden "Meet the Press" programme as DMP Commissioner at the DMP Media Centre on this morning.
"DMP wants to work as the servant of the people," he said, referring to the slogan of Police Week-2026 - "My Police, My Country, Bangladesh First."
Highlighting the security challenges of a densely populated megacity of nearly three crore residents, he said the DMP launched a special drive from May 1 targeting mugging, extortion, juvenile gangs, drug trafficking, online gambling, cyber fraud and hacking.
He said the DMP's cyber unit was being strengthened to tackle cybercrime and ensure digital security for citizens.
The recently established digital forensic laboratory under the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit has received recognition from the ICT Ministry, which he said would play a groundbreaking role in investigations under the Cyber Security Act.
The commissioner warned that operations against extortionists, armed criminals, drug traders and online fraud syndicates would continue with full force.
"Our position against mugging and any form of extortion is zero tolerance. No political or social identity of offenders will be considered," he said.
Addressing Dhaka's chronic traffic congestion, the DMP chief said the police had adopted technology-driven traffic management systems, including AI-powered cameras at major intersections, which were already encouraging greater compliance with traffic laws.
He also mentioned several technology-based public service initiatives, including the "Hello DMP" platform for online complaints and general diary (GD) submissions, and the "Hotel Border System" aimed at identifying suspicious individuals staying in hotels.
Ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, the commissioner said security at cattle markets, Eid congregations, shopping malls and residential areas had been given top priority.
Special security measures have already been taken at bus terminals, launch terminals and railway stations to ensure safe travel for homebound passengers during the Eid holidays, he said.
"Strict action would be taken against overcharging fares and carrying excess passengers," he warned.
Additional police forces will be deployed across the capital during the Eid vacation, while citizens were encouraged to avoid carrying large amounts of cash and instead use banking channels for financial transactions.
He also warned of active measures against "oggyan party", "molom party", muggers and counterfeit currency networks during the festive season.
Calling for greater public participation, the DMP commissioner urged residents to share information on extortionists, drug dealers and juvenile gangs with the police or through the national emergency service 999.
"If any police member delays taking action, our position against them will also be very strict," he said.
