Ziaur Rahman’s Each One, Teach One policy laid foundation for literacy: Milon

DHAKA, May 19, 2026 (BSS) - Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Hoque Milon has said Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman’s Each One, Teach One policy had essentially laid the strong foundation for Bangladesh’s remarkable progress in literacy today.

He made the remarks at a roundtable discussion titled “Teachers’ Continuous Professional Development,” held on the sidelines of the ongoing Education World Forum 2026 in London, said a press release received here today.

Prime Minister’s Education Affairs Adviser Mahdi Amin was also present in the meeting held today. 

Director of English and School Education at the British Council Michael Connolly and education ministers and senior officials from various Pakistani provinces, including Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh, participated in the roundtable discussion.

At one stage of the discussion, Pakistani ministers asked how Bangladesh had achieved such extraordinary progress in literacy rates despite having an economic and social context similar to Pakistan’s. 

In response, Milon highlighted the visionary implementation and success of the historic mass education programme introduced by Ziaur Rahman.

During the roundtable, Mahdi Amin elaborated on the current government’s forward-looking plans to ensure quality education in Bangladesh. 

In particular, he emphasized the government’s new initiative, “One Teacher, One Tab,” aimed at making teachers more modern and technologically skilled.

The roundtable served as an open and constructive platform for exchanging experiences among high-level participants regarding teachers’ professional development and quality enhancement.

In addition to identifying common challenges in South Asia’s education sector, the meeting also included detailed discussions on modernizing future education systems and exploring potential areas of bilateral and multilateral cooperation in this regard.
