Bijoy Saroni's Kalmilata Market fire brought under control

DHAKA, May 19, 2026 (BSS) - A fire that broke out at Kalmilata Bazar at Bijoy Saroni More in the capital was brought under control after around two hours of frantic efforts by firefighters this morning.

The blaze originated on the ground floor of the market at about 5:14am and was brought under control around 7:00am with the efforts of 10 firefighting units, said Lt Col Md Mahmudul Hasan while briefing reporters at the scene.

He said firefighters, with assistance from local residents, managed to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby Cure Hospital.

According to fire service officials, the ground floor of the market houses a kitchen market, while the first floor contains various shops, including electronic goods stores.

Replying to a question, Lt Col Hasan said the Fire Service received information about the blaze through a call to the National Emergency Service 999 at 5:14am. 

Three firefighting units initially rushed to the spot within six minutes, while additional units later joined the operation.

He said the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage could be determined only after an investigation.

No casualties were reported till filing of this report, he added.
