DHAKA, May 14, 2026 (BSS) - Chief Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad Md. Nurul Islam today called for a sincere, responsible and efficient administration in achieving the country's desired development goals.
"The government formulates development plans, while government officials implement them. Desired national development can only be achieved if the administration performs its duties with sincerity," he told journalists after the monthly meeting of the Barguna District Law and Order Committee in Barguna.
Md. Oli Ullah, MP, and Zila Parishad administrator Md. Nazrul Islam Molla attended the meeting as guests of honour.
The Chief Whip said that effective and accountable roles of public officials are essential for implementing the government's policies and development programmes successfully.
Referring to the administrative system in the United States, he said nearly 4,000 new officials assume responsibilities when a new government takes office and leave after the tenure ends, making coordination between the government and administration more effective.
He also called for regular attendance of officials at workplaces and maintaining the quality of development projects, according to a press release.
Highlighting the government's focus on economic progress over divisive politics, Nurul Islam cited Singapore as an example of a nation that achieved rapid development through political consensus on national interests.
"If all stakeholders can reach consensus on national issues, any challenge, including the energy crisis, can be resolved," he said.
Highlighting the importance of coastal development, the Chief Whip proposed forming a separate ministry or special development authority for the country's coastal districts.
Coastal regions, he said, hold vast potential in economic zones, wind power generation, tourism, deep seaports, fisheries, oil and gas exploration and shipbuilding industries.
He assured support for any initiative aimed at accelerating the development of coastal areas.
At the meeting, Nurul Islam reiterated the government's zero-tolerance policy against drugs and instructed authorities to take immediate legal action over a recent acid attack on a child in Barguna.
He also urged the administration to strengthen measures against smuggling.
The Chief Whip also said the government has introduced more than a hundred welfare-oriented programmes since assuming office, including farmer cards, family cards, waiver of agricultural loans, allowances for imams and muezzins and suspension of NGO loan instalments for up to one year.
Later, he inaugurated the Agriculture and Technology Fair-2026 and visited different stalls.
The meeting, chaired by Barguna Deputy Commissioner Tashlima Akter, was attended by the district police superintendent, government officials and media representatives.
