RAJSHAHI, May 9, 2026 (BSS) - Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) Professor S M Abdur Razzak emphasized that technology should not be limited to just usage but should make the country self-reliant through innovation.

“Your job will be to convert science into technology. As engineers, you must create new technologies. We will not remain mere users of technology; we will create technology, we will export technology. Engineering students are needed to achieve this goal,” he told the newly admitted students.

VC Abdur Razzak made these remarks as the chief guest at the orientation program for first-year undergraduate students of the 2025–2026 academic year held today at the RUET auditorium.

A total of 1,235 students from 14 departments under three faculties participated in the program, held in three sessions. Classes for first-year students will begin tomorrow (Sunday).

Highlighting the importance of student life, the Vice-Chancellor said, “Now is the time to prepare to achieve your goals—that is, the next four years. If you fail to prepare, you are preparing to embrace failure. Along with becoming good engineers, you must also grow into good citizens. The reputation and pride of RUET, as well as the country, depend on you.”

Congratulating the parents, he added, “Your contribution has been the greatest in bringing your children to this stage today.”

The program was presided over by Professor Dr. Md. Robiul Islam Sarkar, Director of Students’ Welfare.

He said they are working to create a safe and academic-friendly environment. Alongside implementing anti-ragging and anti-bullying policies on campus, various welfare initiatives including health insurance for students have been taken.

Everyone must come forward to maintain a stable campus environment. At present, 100 percent of female students and about 80 percent of male students have been ensured accommodation.

Special guests who spoke at the event include Professor Dr. Md. Kamruzzaman, Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering; Professor Dr. Bashir Ahmed, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering; and Professor Dr. Md. Nurul Islam, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

The heads of 14 departments were also present.

RUET has a total of 1,230 seats across 14 departments under three engineering faculties. Of these, the CSE, EEE, CE, and ME departments have 180 seats each; MTE, CME, IPE, MSE, URP, ECE, and ETE have 60 seats each; and Architecture, ChE, and ECM have 30 seats each.

However, in the current academic year, a total of 1,235 students have been admitted to the first year.
