CHATTOGRAM, May 3, 2026 (BSS): Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain today said the ongoing drain and sewer cleaning programme is a crucial initiative for Chattogram City. He also emphasized the importance of citizen responsibility in maintaining a clean city.

“City Corporation's efforts alone are not sufficient, and residents must play also a vital role in keeping the city clean", he opined.

During an inspection of waterlogging decontamination activities in various wards of the city, including Wards 30 East Madarbari, 26 West Madarbari, and 28 Pathantuli, Dr. Shahadat stressed the need for citizen awareness.

Dr. Shahadat Hossain pointed out that simply cleaning the drains is not enough if residents continue to litter with plastic, polythene, and waste. He urged residents to be mindful of their actions and cooperate with the cleaning efforts to achieve a lasting solution to the waterlogging problem. The Mayor emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining a clean and sustainable environment in the city.

The city Mayor addressed concerns about temporary inconveniences caused by the construction of the Swiss Gate in the Guljarkhal area by the Water Development Board during recent rains, particularly affecting the Agrabad Commercial Area. He expressed regret to local residents for the inconvenience and assured that the 34th Engineering Brigade of the Bangladesh Army and the Water Development Board have been instructed to expedite the construction process.

The Mayor emphasized that once the Swiss Gate construction is completed, it will help control tidal water and significantly reduce waterlogging in the affected areas. Additionally, renovation work on the city's important Hijra Canal and Jamalkhan Canal is in progress, with a strict deadline set for completion to further alleviate waterlogging issues.

Dr. Shahadat Hossain highlighted the city's success in reducing waterlogging by 50 to 60 percent last year and emphasized the importance of completing canal renovation and drainage development projects for greater benefits to residents. He urged local public representatives, political leaders, activists, and citizens to contribute to maintaining cleanliness in their areas by installing dustbins at necessary locations, stating that creating a clean city is a collective social responsibility.

The Mayor referenced the Prime Minister's emphasis on cleanliness and encouraged the development of a culture where individuals regularly clean their surroundings and drains, envisioning a widespread movement that would lead to cleaner and more livable cities nationwide, including Chattogram.
