DHAKA, April 25, 2026 (BSS) - Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said the government is working to ensure proper recognition of the talents of innovators, researchers, entrepreneurs, and creative individuals by establishing a modern, easy, and effective service system. 

“Necessary measures such as online registration, expedited services, strengthened legal protection, and actions against counterfeit products have already been undertaken,” he said.

The Prime Minister said this in a message issued on the occasion of ‘World Intellectual Property Day’ to be observed tomorrow in Bangladesh, in line with other countries across the globe.

In his message, the Prime Minister said that ‘World Intellectual Property Day 2026’ is being celebrated in Bangladesh with due importance, highlighting its significance for the country’s accelerated development.

Referring to this year’s theme—“IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate”, he described it as significant and time befitting, particularly in harnessing the intellectual potentials of the youth.

Tarique Rahman expressed his firm belief that protection of intellectual property encourages innovation, creativity, and new ideas. 

“It also plays a vital role in sports technology, athlete training systems, branding of sports goods, broadcasting industry, digital content, and entrepreneurship development,” he added.

The Prime Minister noted with satisfaction that Bangladesh is enriched with a vibrant youth population. He said that in the current era of rapid advancement in information technology, agriculture, industry, research, startups, and the creative economy, ensuring intellectual property protection is a key prerequisite for national progress. “The incumbent government is aware in this regard,” he added.

Highlighting the importance of safeguarding traditional Bangladeshi products, the Prime Minister said the government is also committed and thus working to secure international recognition and protection for geographical indication (GI) local products such as Jamdani and Hilsa, thereby strengthening their position in the global market.

He further noted that the inclusion of sports in this year’s theme is highly justified, as sports has evolved beyond entertainment into a promising profession, a source of social strength, and an emerging economic sector.

Tarique Rahman mentioned that initiatives such as allowances and sports cards for national athletes have been introduced to ensure their financial security and a dignified life. 

“Efforts are also underway to identify new talents across the country, expand modern training facilities, and build a world-class sporting environment,” he added.

The Prime Minister also expressed hope that these initiatives would create new opportunities in sports-based industries, production of sports goods, branding, sports media, tourism, investment, and employment.
