DHAKA, April 25, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku today said the livestock sector is vital for strengthening the national economy and stressed the need for its further development.
"The government is giving the highest priority to this sector as it plays a crucial role in ensuring food security and increasing exports," he said while addressing a discussion marking World Veterinary Day-2026 at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) auditorium in the capital.
The day is being observed with the theme "Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health."
Highlighting food safety, the state minister said veterinarians are playing a key role in ensuring safe food for people.
He noted that public awareness about food safety is increasing and interest in the veterinary profession has grown significantly in recent years.
He said treating animals is challenging as they (animals) cannot express their problems, adding that professionals in this sector are highly skilled and dedicated.
Tuku said animal husbandry and veterinary science are facing various challenges, but these can be addressed through coordination and joint efforts. "If we work together, all problems can be resolved," he added.
He also said the livestock sector is being brought under the farmer card scheme, allowing livestock farmers to enjoy benefits similar to crop farmers.
The meeting was chaired by Veterinary Doctors Association of Bangladesh (VAB) President Prof Dr Md Mahbub Alam, while Fisheries and Livestock Ministry Secretary Md Delwar Hossain spoke as special guest.
Director General (In-Charge) of the Department of Livestock Services Md. Shahzaman Khan and Director (Administration) of the Department of Livestock Services, Dhaka, Dr. Md. Bayzer Rahman spoke as distinguished guests.
Senior officials and veterinarians from across the country attended the programme.
Earlier, the state minister took part in a colourful rally and inaugural events marking the day.
