DHAKA, April 22, 2026 (BSS) - Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury, accompanied by a Gazipur lawmaker and senior government officials travelled to Gazipur by bus in a rare move aimed at reducing public expenditure.
The trip was made to attend a meeting held yesterday at the conference room of the Gazipur Deputy Commissioner, said a press release today.
The meeting focused on maintaining industrial stability and ensuring timely payment of wages and bonuses to workers ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
In a unique step, the minister and his entourage avoided using multiple government vehicles and instead travelled together from Eskaton to Gazipur on a single bus, saving the use of at least 20 cars.
The decision was taken by the minister on Tuesday evening as part of efforts to curb unnecessary government spending.
Gazipur-5 Member of Parliament AKM Fazlul Haque Milon, Labour and Employment Secretary Md Abdur Rahman Tarafdar, Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Inspector General of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments Omar Md Imrul Mohsin, Director General of the Department of Labour Md Abdus Samad Al Azad, and other senior officials accompanied him.
The initiative helped reduce fuel consumption and cut public expenses.
Amid ongoing global economic challenges, the minister's bus journey is being viewed as a notable example of austerity in public administration
