RANGPUR, April 15, 2026 (BSS) - Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) celebrated Pahela Baishakh, the Bengali New Year 1433, with vibrant festivities, cultural programmes and a colourful procession on the campus on Tuesday.

On this eve, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali said that Pahela Baishakh is an important symbol of Bengali tradition, culture and identity.

"Our Bengali heritage and tradition must be preserved. By holding on to our culture, we should move forward to build a progressive, enlightened and prosperous Bangladesh," he said while visiting different stalls at the Baishakhi Mela organized by various departments in front of the academic building. 

Earlier, he inaugurated the colourful Baishakhi Shobhajatra from the south gate of the university's administrative building.

The procession, accompanied by Baishakhi songs, flute tunes and traditional music, paraded through the campus roads including Parker Intersection, Shaheed Abu Sayeed Square and Cadet College intersection, before concluding in front of the academic building. Teachers, students, officials and employees participated, showcasing the diverse traditions of Bengali culture.

A cultural programme was also held at the Media Complex in the afternoon, featuring performances marking Pahela Baishakh.

The university authorities arranged a two-day programme to welcome the Bengali New Year and bid farewell to the outgoing year. 

As part of the first day's events on April 13, a kite carnival was organized at the university football field in observance of Chaitra Sankranti.
