Demand for formation of ‘Optometry Council’ to improve eye care

DHAKA, April 9, 2026 (BSS) - Graduate optometrist representatives from the Institute of Community Ophthalmology (ICO) and Chattogram Eye Hospital and Training Centre (CEHTC) have demanded the formation of an ‘Optometry Council’ to improve the quality of eye care.

They made the demand after paying a courtesy call on State Minister for Health Dr MA Muhith at the Secretariat here today.

The State Minister said that all government and private stakeholders must work together to ensure improved eye care for the general public.

The meeting placed special emphasis on the formation of an updated ‘Optometry Council’ and government recognition of these professionals in the health sector.

The five-member delegation comprised Dr Gazi Riaz Rahman, Shahadat Hossain Delwar, SM Abdullah Al Mamun, Arman Bin Aziz, and SM Moinul Islam.

The meeting focused on formulating a strong policy framework in collaboration with both the public and private sectors.

After the discussion, State Minister for Health Dr Muhith said that the government is determined to ensure improved eye care for the people of the country. For this purpose, all government and private stakeholders must work together, he added.

He assured that the proposals raised by the delegation would be considered seriously.
