MOFA clarifies opposition leader’s letter

DHAKA, Mar 11, 2026 (BSS)- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) today clarified the circumstances of sending a letter to the foreign minister by the leader of the opposition, rejecting a media claim of any related phone conversation involving Jamaat leaders.

In a statement issued today, the ministry said Dr Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan, acting as the foreign affairs adviser to the leader of the opposition, sent the letter electronically to the foreign minister on February 22, 2026 on behalf of the opposition leader.

Later, Hasan personally handed over the same letter to the foreign minister which was written on the official letterhead of the leader of the opposition in the National Parliament, the statement added.

The letter recommended the appointment of Dr Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan as an adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the rank of adviser or minister, citing his role as foreign affairs adviser to the opposition leader.

In the signed letter, the opposition leader praised Dr Hasan’s competence, professionalism and prudence, and recommended his appointment in order to collectively advance the country’s foreign policy.

The opposition leader also requested the foreign minister to give special consideration to the proposal, the statement said.

The ministry noted that the letter bears only the signature of the leader of the opposition.
It further said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is prepared to make the full text of the letter public, provided the opposition leader gives written consent.

The ministry also rejected a claim made in a newspaper report stating that Jamaat leaders had directly contacted the foreign minister by phone regarding the letter.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs clearly states that no such phone conversation took place,” the statement said.
