Technology-based traffic management essential for future: IGP

DHAKA, March 11, 2026 (BSS) - Inspector General of Police (IGP)  Md. Ali Hossain Fakir, has said that future traffic management must be technology-based, emphasizing that modern urban management is not possible without smart traffic systems.

He made the remarks while addressing a day-long workshop titled “Urban Traffic Management in Dhaka: Challenges, Innovations and Directions for Progress” held at Police Staff College Bangladesh today. 

The workshop aimed to explore sustainable solutions and improve traffic management in Dhaka.

The police chief said Bangladesh is moving forward through rapid urbanization, which has led to a significant increase in vehicles, expansion of the urban economy and growing movement of people. 

As a result, road management has become one of the major challenges for the state.

“To address this challenge, everyone must work in a coordinated manner,” he said, adding that the government has already given special importance to resolving traffic congestion in the capital.

He noted that effective initiatives have been instructed to tackle traffic congestion in Dhaka.

Addressing police officers, the IGP said traffic police are often the first point of contact between citizens and the police. 

“When a traffic sergeant stands on the road, he not only controls vehicles but also represents the law and order of the state. His behavior, professionalism and ethics directly influence public trust in the police,” he added.

The workshop was presided over by the Rector of Police Staff College Bangladesh, Kazi Md. Fazlul Karim. 

The welcome speech was delivered by Vice-Rector SM Akhtaruzzaman.

The keynote presentation was delivered by Acting Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Md. Sarwar, while another keynote was presented by DMP Joint Commissioner Sufian Ahmed.

The presentations highlighted the current status of traffic management in Dhaka city, the causes of traffic congestion, challenges in law enforcement and potential technology- and policy-based solutions.

The workshop aimed to formulate practical policy recommendations and action plans to ensure smooth traffic management in the Dhaka Metropolitan area.

Participants discussed key issues including the effectiveness of traffic law enforcement, public transport development, bus route management, integration of rickshaws and other non-motorized transport, illegal parking, pavement management, pedestrian safety and citizen awareness.

Additional Inspector General (Admin) AKM Awlad Hossain, Additional Inspector General (Logistics) Mosleh Uddin Ahmed and Additional Inspector General (Development) Sardar Nurul Amin participated as special discussants and highlighted different aspects of addressing the challenges of urban traffic management.

Participants emphasized the need for technology-based traffic systems, public transport reforms, improved law enforcement efficiency and stronger coordination among relevant agencies.

The speakers expressed hope that the workshop’s recommendations will contribute significantly to improving traffic management and future urban transport planning in Dhaka.

Acting DMP Commissioner Md. Sarwar delivered the closing remarks at the workshop.
