DHAKA, March 9, 2026 (BSS) – The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh has taken an initiative to formulate a universal anti-plagiarism policy to prevent plagiarism in higher education and research.
UGC member Professor Dr Masuma Habib shared this information today as the chief guest at a workshop held at the Commission's auditorium to gather stakeholder feedback on the draft anti-plagiarism policy.
Professor Habib noted that while several universities have already developed and implemented their own anti-plagiarism regulations, a centralized policy by the UGC will serve as a uniform guideline for all institutions.
She emphasized that the proposed framework would be especially helpful for young researchers, providing them with clear concepts regarding citations, rules for data usage, and the ethical dimensions of research.
The UGC member expressed optimism that the policy would increase awareness and curb intellectual theft in the research field.
She also stressed the importance of morality and ethics among teachers and researchers, stating that plagiarism would decrease if educators stood before their students with strong ethical foundations.
Dr. Durga Rani Sarker, Director of UGC’s Strategic Planning and Quality Assurance (SPQA) division, who chaired the session, stated that the UGC is committed to preventing plagiarism in academic and research reporting.
She added that the draft policy is being finalized by incorporating the opinions of teachers, researchers, administrators, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure it is universally and globally acceptable.
The workshop was moderated by SPQA Deputy Director Mohammad Monir Ullah. It was attended by directors and additional directors of Institutional Quality Assurance Cells (IQAC) from 21 public and private universities, along with senior officials from the UGC.
