Nominations called for UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize

DHAKA, Mar 9, 2026 (BSS) - UNESCO has invited its Member States to nominate candidates for the UNESCO–Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sciences (4th edition). 

The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Dhaka has informed the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, in this regard, a handout said.

This international prize is awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions to the development, dissemination of knowledge and international cooperation in the field of basic sciences. The scope of the prize includes important branches of basic sciences, including chemistry, physics, mathematics and biology, which are of great importance for innovation and sustainable development.

The UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sciences aims to raise awareness of the importance of these disciplines for peaceful and prosperous societies. It was created to foster scientific progress, science popularisation and international cooperation.

The prize is awarded annually to two scientists in recognition of their breakthrough discoveries, outstanding innovations and avid promotion of the basic sciences which have led to socioeconomic transformation at global or regional scale. The first edition of the prize was in 2021.

Each winner will receive a gold medal, US$ 250,000, and a certificate. Women scientists are particularly encouraged to apply for this award.

Interested candidates should submit their applications online by 15 March 2026 and the application should be in English or French.
